This group was formed on Nov 24th, 2019 in response to a question I have been asked numerous times over the last few years about The New Haven Arts community. What contributed to New Haven's Golden Age of the arts?

By sharing our unique individual memories of meeting, creating, participating, and supporting each other, we will be developing insights into how this important time in New Haven occurred and simultaneously creating our own "local art history" by pairing artifacts with verbal accounts.

HELP US TURN YOUR MEMORIES INTO LOCAL ART HISTORY! Please join us for this exploration and add your voice in a way that works best for you.

Experience the stimulation and joy of reconnecting with many of those individuals you knew and worked with during that decade.

By joining us you will be helping to develop a more complete picture of this time in New Haven's Local Art History.

All our voices together will help create and preserve an accurate picture of the truth about and the vitality of New Haven's local art and cultural community for the future. Stimulate your memory. activate your voice. and enrich your present moment... hope to see you in the archive...

Hello Bev!

We had such fun listening in on your ZOOM reunion of artists!!  It was delightful and really gave me a sense for what a dynamic and exciting time (and love fest) those years were for you and all your colleagues on the call.  Clearly, it was a pivotal time for all of you, and the kind of coming together with the right people in the right place at the right time that is few and far between.  I had hoped to stay on for a bit of the "party" afterwards, but right at the end of the ZOOM my internet glitched and bumped me out and, try as I might,  I could not get back in to get the link for the party.  I hope you had a great time.  Please give my regards to Pixie if you are in touch with her anytime soon.  I would have loved to see your daughter, Clare!  What a bright light.

I am happy to hear that you are having, in the midst of COVID, a productive and satisfying time with your artistic work.  Best to you, with lots of love.

Karen

"Richey said it was the first of several edible statements for which the factory and PMVI were her creative springboard. At the Arts Council’s annual arts awards at Long Wharf Theatre in 1984, she rolled out a huge confection titled “Eat Audubon Street,” her response to the news that the Audubon Arts Corridor’s housing stock (now the Audubon Court Condominiums) would not be affordable after all."

“The google doc album looks fantastic! I so enjoyed taking the trip through the planning, the construction, the decorating, and the event which your collection provides. It’s well done –congrats on digitizing, laying out, including/not including, and making it internet-able.” Roberta Chambers 2020

"In the gallery, Richey has assembled a small display that walks viewers through the installation, with photographs, preserved rubber stamps, old programs, and a screen-printed shirt from the event. It’s a window into history that is both cheeky and instructive: the things Richey was asking for in 1988 are still things artists are asking for today. The only difference is that New Haven is 32 years and four mayoral administrations older than it was then.

When a viewer sees a faded yellow “permit to eat cake,” they may be reminded of the long, confusion-riddled showdown between artists and alders over who got to live in the Hamilton Street Clock Factory last year. Or, perhaps, the narrow-eyed befuddlement that often strikes first-time presenters to the city’s Historic District Commission, when a ten-minute request is met with four hours of debate. Or the Board of Alders' struggle to balance the city budget each year when 60 percent of the city’s grand list is tax exempt." to me
Good morning Bev,
Hopefully this morning you are basking in the fun and exhilarating and loving zoom reunion of last night and one filled with memory telling stories.
I enjoyed seeing and hearing all of you trip down memory lane. It certainly brought back and enhanced my memories of that period
I also found myself remembering Paul and his fellow Jaycees who started The Arts Festival on the Green in 1964 or was it 65. I helped staff the medical tent.
I didn’t go to your post party. I was zoomed out; for 6 hours prior to you I had attended a zoom conference on conservation. I needed dinner and to get off my butt!
I enjoyed getting the quick look at Danny; lovely
I received Karen’s hello but did not see her. Is she still in Minnesota?
Do you know anything about her Mom, Doty?
Looking forward to staying in touch with you.
Love and congratulations,
Pixie

Remembering PMVI and the First Show of 1984 ....

by Curt Pardee

"Curt Pardee This is an excellent memoir plus journalistic reporting on the event and the process forming it. I enjoyed your writing immensely. You remember some details I don't plus it is interesting to hear the emotional viewpoint from inside your mind your persona. I was also new to the group so was going through some of the same self-evaluations. All told it was a very creative, groundbreaking show & experience!" Roberta Chambers

"That was really great Curt!!! You should do more writing! Very cool artwork too!!" Doreen Gayer

It was summer of 1983, August I think. I have a friend I knew from The Paier School of Art who was visiting, Bill Quinn. He was originally from New Hampshire, came to Hamden/New Haven to attend Paier and after that decided to move to Tallahassee Florida. Bill was a creative painter and was involved with a group of artists in Florida who were motivated by a mutual contempt for respectable art.

Bill was up visiting a professor friend from Paier Paul Rutkovsky who was part of an artist collective in New Haven the Paper Mache Video Institute. One late afternoon Bill invited me to come with him to see Mr. Rutkovsky’s studio in New Haven. I was interested. We went over to the old New Haven Clock Factory on Hamilton Street which is where PMVI had its meetings.

We climbed the stairs to the second floor where Rutkovsky’s studio was in this old gigantic brick building. Rutkovsky was not there but my friend Bill Quinn had the key to his studio and said it was fine we can go in. I did not know what to expect but I certainly was not expecting the work piled high all around 2 big rooms. Tall television sets on high legs, houses on long curvy legs, and other contraptions all built out of paper mache wrapped around wireframes painted in crazy color. I was quite impressed and wished the artist was around but after some time Bill and I left.

We went somewhere and lit up a joint and Bill started to tell me about an upcoming art event being put together by PMVI to celebrate the coming year 1984 with this show using the great work by George Orwell as its centerpiece. Bill goes, “Yeah Curt you should get involved you would probably have fun and meet some interesting people.”

“Okay, sounds good. I normally don’t work in a group though.” I said. Bill goes on, “Well why don’t you try something different. They are having a meeting here next week. The person who is heading the show is Beverly Richey and there will be a bunch of other New Haven artists. Just go to the meeting and see what you think.” I asked, “Are you going to be in this show?” Bill says no he isn’t he is heading back to Florida, I think after Labor Day. So I said, ”Sure what the heck I will probably go.” I really liked the old clock factory building, that was a major reason I wanted to come back with its huge courtyard it reeked of old history. Plus I was intrigued because I was unfamiliar with the New Haven art scene and figured it was a good opportunity to meet some people and whatnot.READ MORE HERE: Facebook

"...on display is an installation referencing an iconic 1988 collaborative art piece by Bev Richey. Her work commented on the bureaucracy of New Haven government. In the installation, viewers can participate in tiresome bureaucratic procedures — such as filling out paperwork, getting approved stamps, and standing in long lines — to get a slice of the “Amazing Bureaucratic Birthday Cake.”"Read More Here

Hi Lucy,
I hope all is well with you during these changing times. My life has been surprisingly busy. The FACTORY exhibit is still installed at the new Haven Museum and I was invited by curator Frank Mitchell to participate in the show "Who Governs?" now open through Dec 12th at Artspace.

There will be a zoom panel with the following panelists who participated in this large scale 1988 public artwork.
  • Jeff Burnett 350 festival coordinator
  • Bitsie Clark Cake Commissioner
  • Roberta and Phillip Chambers fashion/operations
  • Nikila Cole 350 festival coordinator
  • Mimsie Coleman media relations/operations
  • Bill Derry Cake Commissioner
  • John Landino operations
  • Robert Gregson Cake Commissioner /Festival Director
  • Beverly Richey Artistic director/operations
  • Amy Seham Cake Commissioner
The exhibit at the museum combined with this new show at Artspace nicely demonstrates the progression of my collaborative community-inclusive work. I hope New Haven Arts would be willing to write up something related to these two projects and report on this virtual reunion with once New Haven-based artist collaborators joining us from as far away as Canada, Costa Rica, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Massachusetts.

The panel will is scheduled for
WED. Nov 18th, 7pm
Hope you will be able to join us in the live audience at that time. Otherwise the plan is to record it and make it available on Youtube.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thanks for all you do for the New Haven Arts Community.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely, Bev Richey
